"My Scandinavian designs began with my mother's persistent encouragement for me to learn Norwegian rosemaling and both parents ardent commissioning of Scandinavian designs painted on gifts for family and friends. My ancestral homelands are Blekinge, Dalsland, Skåne and Vårmland in Sweden; Telemark and the Hardanger fjords in Norway. My designs harmonize my heritage of Scandinavian folk art with numerous influences from ancient to present day."

With a degree in Fine Arts, Susan has held various teaching and administrative positions. She has written and/or illustrated stories and educational materials for Augsburg/Fortress, Current Inc., The Writing Conference Inc., Creare Publications and now for her own company, S.S.S. Scandinavian Designs. Susan and her husband live on a northern Minnesota lake in a renovated cabin originally built by her uncle and her grandfather who emigrated from Sweden. An adjacent little log guest cabin became the studio out of which she works.

Recently, Susan was commissioned to paint three of the twelve 5-foot tall Dala Horses for Gammelgarden Museum  in Scandia, MN.  As seen in the photo, from left to right, the first dala horse Susan painted was from a design created by elementary school children, the second was painted in the traditional dala horse design and the third was an orriginal design by Susan Swanson Swartz.

Ask your favorite Scandinavian shop or visit Berquist Imports for my products and Bergen Trayner products with my designs.
